As you may have heard, Cristiano Ronaldo is off to Real Madrid for a frankly staggering £80 million pounds. That is a ridiculous sum of money, even for a player of Ronaldos ability. There’s reports this morning that he will be earning over £180k a week for his troubles – mind boggling!
But this is a Liverpool blog so why am I talking about Ronaldo? Well the Real Madrid presidente, Florentino Perez, would seem to be in the business for a deep lying playmaker to join Ronny and is making eyes at Liverpools Xabi Alonso with talks of a bid of £25 million plus Alvaro Negredo or Javier Saviola, depending on which paper or website you read.
So will Xabi go? I’d hope not but he’s rumoured to still be upset at the club trying to get rid of him last year to finance a move for Gary Barry. Alonso then had easily his best season in a Liverpool shirt (and grew an awesome beard!), forging a partnership with Javier Mascherano that underpinned the excellent football the team played at the back end of the season. The amount of money being bandied about is enough to turn anyones head but from a footballing point of view I think Xabi would be better off being a key player for Liverpool than another Galactico for Madrid – it doesn’t sound Madrid will be playing the slow patient football that Xabis playing style suits best, they’re going to be going for the patented Keegan style of ‘we’ll always score more than the opposition’.
This is the main problem with having so many Spanish players – while it’s great to have them at the club, when they are playing well they are always going to be linked with one of either Madrid or Barcelona. The English league is the best in the world (so Sky keep telling me) but if Spain is home and if one of those clubs show interest, I can see how it’d be tempting.
The loss of Alonso would be doubly galling given that Barry has now taken the Dubai dirham at Man City – I was never convinced about signing Barry anyway, he does the same sort of job as Xabi but not as well, but he’d've done if Xabi left.
If he does go, I don’t think the fans will resent him for it and he’d always be regarded as an LFC legend for banging in that rebound in Istanbul and his goals from the opponents half against Luton and Newcastle. I honestly don’t think Xabi will leave – it’s not like he’s doing his international career any harm playing in England, Spain finished their friendly match on Wednesday with five players from Liverpool on the pitch! Having seen the improvement at Liverpool last season and having already won silverware with the club, I’d like to think he’d be around to be part of next years challenge – stay with us Xabi lad!
