Fabio shows the way

Fabio Aurelio is potentially back in the squad for this weekends clash with Burnley – great news as when he is in the side he gives a balance to the side that can only be enhanced with Glen Johnsons addition to the squad. So after a prolonged absence from the side, missing pre-season and the mixed league start, is he expecting to walk straight into the side? Is he hell…quotes from Football365:
“In his absence, Argentinian youngster Emiliano Insua has taken the left-back berth, and Aurelio knows he faces tough competition for a place in the team.
He said: “He is playing really well and he was also good last season so he has a lot of confidence.
“Seeing how well he is doing is not a surprise to me or my team-mates, working with him every day you can see he is a player with quality and can do a very good job for the team. “We have three left-backs with Emiliano, myself and Andrea Dossena so we all have to keep working hard and make it a difficult decision for the manager.”
Doesn’t that make a pleasant change from the whinging heard earlier on in the week from Ryan Babel? I thoroughly expected the usual ‘I never said them things’ retraction (see John Arnes brother this week for a perfect example) from Babel but that’s not been forthcoming either. You have to wonder about the timing of his comments – giving interviews to any publication, Dutch or otherwise, around the transfer window deadline can never be a good idea but especially not trying to bully the manager into giving you a move.
Babels early promise faded very quickly and he has done little to suggest that the high price we paid for him was justified. He complained that after the Spurs game he was dropped quicker than a hot stone but Yossi did more in the first ten minutes of replacing Babel than Babel had done the entire time he was on the pitch. Babel lacks energy, is unwilling to track back and doesn’t chase after his mistakes when he loses the ball and can therefore not expect anyone to sympathise with him when he feels hard done by.
The only hope he may have of garnering some sympathy is the fact that he was bought after making his name in Holland as a striker and is now being asked to play by Liverpool on the wing – sound familiar? Everyone’s favourite Dutch labrador Dirk has undergone a similar transformation but got his head down and worked for the side and is now one of the first names on the team sheet.
Laziness & inactivity in football will only be rewarded if balanced by outrageous creativity & goal scoring – Matt Le Tissier being my favourite example, you’ll struggle to find a Southampton fan that will complain about Le Tissiers workrate but he was afforded that leeway by the fact that he single-handedly kept Southampton out of relegation trouble for several successive seasons. Babel has not done anything to even approach that kind of forgiveness and as such should keep his mouth firmly shut.
Quick word on tomorrows game against Burnley – perfect opportunity to give Lucas a rest from the Anfield crowd and let Spearing have a go at a smaller side. Spearing had a great pre-season and played well when given the opportunity last year – Burnley would be the perfect opponents to let him have a go at.

ummmmm
I think you’ll find Lucas had a great game against Burnley
These are the types of game he SHOULD be playing in. And it seemed like, without Mascherano alongside him, the shackles were off and he could play his own way.
I’ll be surprised if he does it against the big teams, but I hope the Brazilian prooves me wrong!

One swallow does not a summer make Lord Luis – although Lucas did have a good game against Burnley, I still think that Spearing should have had a go – Burnley are exactly the sort of side that Spearing would excel against with his tenacity and willing to run. More on Mascherano missing in the next post, keep an eye out!

I agree Spearing should’ve had a go, but why not then give both of them a go?
Makes you wonder if Spearing is ever gonna get a chance
Instead of bringing him on, they bought on Voronin (Who did make 1 good pass, but is beyond useless in my opinion)
Games like Burnley is when the youngsters should get the chance. I know N’gog got on but seriously is he the future of our beloved club

Why not eh? That’s a good point.
Voronin should be shipped out at the first available opportunity, even if it’s on a free – I can’t believe someone actually thought he was worth signing. N’gog has scored goals for the club but they seem to be in the last minute from two yards out when the game is already won – jury is still out.

Very much so, but he is young and HAS scored goals, but it leads to a deeper underlying point, all this money that had been poured into the Academy by the previous Administration has obviously gone to waste. I can’t remember the actual figures but something like 10 million over the last couple of years and producing bugger all is not good enough. Spearing and Darby are coming through now, but who before them. Warnock – deemed not good enough (although I personally did not agree). Mellor – Deemed not good enough, and before that, Well the Skipper, but that was what a decade ago!!!!! Even the ‘Kids’ we’ve bought in haven’t shined.
Hobbs – Not given a chance, Anderson – Not Given a chance. If we’re not going to give the kids we’ve paid money for a chance, what hope have the kids coming through the ranks got!
